Yamaha PG-1: More Than Just a Camping Bike
Many people see the Yamaha PG-1 as a motorcycle built for camping trips and outdoor adventures. While it certainly excels in that role, after spending considerable time riding one in very different environments, I've come to realize that the PG-1 offers far more than its rugged appearance suggests.
I've had the opportunity to ride the Yamaha PG-1 on several journeys. My first real experience was a long-distance trip from Bangkok to Chiang Mai with John Rider. More recently, I've been riding it through the heart of Bangkok, navigating some of the city's heaviest traffic. Experiencing the bike in both situations revealed just how versatile it truly is.
At its core, the PG-1 is powered by a 114cc engine paired with a 4-speed rotary gearbox, meaning there's no need to operate a clutch lever. It embraces a lifestyle-oriented design that's highly customizable, making it easy to personalize to your own taste. The bike is lightweight, remarkably fuel-efficient, inexpensive to maintain, and replacement parts are very affordable. Even better, it comes from the factory fully compatible with E20 fuel.
Surprisingly Capable on Long-Distance Rides
Weighing around 78 kg, I found the PG-1 perfectly capable of handling highway journeys. With the throttle fully open, the speedometer would climb to nearly 100 km/h. Tuck in behind the wind, and I managed to see an indicated top speed of around 113 km/h.
Despite wearing dual-purpose (On/Off-Road) tires, the bike feels completely natural on paved roads. Climbing Doi Suthep was genuinely enjoyable, as the transmission provides enough gear ratios to keep the engine in its powerband. Descending the mountain was even more entertaining, with useful engine braking allowing confident control using whichever gear suited the rider's preference.
The suspension also deserves praise. With generous suspension travel and well-balanced damping, weight transfer feels smooth and predictable. It never exhibits the stiff, lifeless feeling that's often associated with small-displacement motorcycles.
Where the PG-1 Truly Shines: Bangkok Traffic
As impressive as it is on touring rides, the PG-1 impressed me even more in everyday city riding.
Anyone who rides regularly in Bangkok knows how challenging the traffic can be. Yet the PG-1 feels incredibly agile. Its wide, high-rise handlebars provide significantly more leverage and control than the narrow, low-mounted handlebars commonly found on small scooters.
That's not to say scooters are inferior—they're designed specifically for relaxed, straightforward urban commuting. However, the PG-1's upright riding position and wide handlebars create a much more engaging riding experience. For riders who genuinely enjoy controlling and maneuvering a motorcycle, even stop-and-go traffic becomes surprisingly enjoyable.
Turning Bad Roads into Good Fun
Originally designed as a lightweight camping motorcycle with mild off-road capability, the PG-1 also handles Bangkok's imperfect roads exceptionally well.
Normally, city riders instinctively avoid potholes, sunken manhole covers, speed bumps, and uneven pavement. On the PG-1, those obstacles become far less intimidating. You simply ride over them with confidence.
What used to be annoying suddenly becomes part of the fun. Every bump, every broken section of road, every speed hump transforms into another reason to smile. Strange as it may sound, that's exactly how the PG-1 makes you feel.
More Than Meets the Eye
The Yamaha PG-1 taught me that it's far more than a motorcycle for casual weekend rides or camping adventures. It can comfortably serve as a daily commuter, a capable touring machine, and an entertaining motorcycle—all wrapped into one affordable package.
Perhaps the biggest surprise is its value. Not only is the motorcycle itself attractively priced, but Yamaha also backs it with an impressive 5-year or 50,000-kilometer warranty, giving owners even more confidence for the long journey ahead.
The Yamaha PG-1 may have been designed with adventure in mind, but after living with it, I'd say it's one of the most versatile small-displacement motorcycles you can buy today.
