----------------------------------------

I recently had the opportunity to visit Öhlins Asia in Chonburi, Thailand, one of Öhlins’ shock absorber manufacturing facilities outside its home country of Sweden.

This visit was particularly special because Öhlins Asia does not normally allow photography or video recording inside its factory. On this occasion, I was granted exclusive access to film inside the facility and brought my own Honda Monkey FTR 125 to have both the front and rear suspension installed and set up directly by the Öhlins Asia team.

Some might think installing aftermarket suspension is straightforward: remove a few bolts, take off the original components, fit the new ones, and the job is done.
But the real key to upgrading suspension is not simply installing it. It is setting it up correctly for the motorcycle, the rider’s weight, and the intended riding conditions.
When people talk about suspension adjustment, they often think first of turning the compression and rebound adjusters. In reality, these should come after the fundamentals have been properly addressed.
The first step is to check whether the spring rate is appropriate for the rider’s weight. Next comes setting the preload to achieve the correct SAG—the amount of suspension travel used under load.
This involves checking both static sag, under the motorcycle’s own weight, and rider sag, with the rider seated in their normal riding position.

Preload does not change the spring’s stiffness. Instead, it adjusts the suspension’s initial operating position and the motorcycle’s loaded ride height, helping maintain appropriate travel for both compression and rebound.
Once the SAG is correctly set, the next step is to test ride the motorcycle and fine-tune compression and rebound according to road conditions, riding style, and the rider’s preferred response.

This is why some riders spend a considerable amount on premium aftermarket suspension but find that their motorcycle doesn’t handle any better—or that further adjustments only make things worse. They may be trying to fine-tune damping before getting the fundamentals, such as spring rate and SAG, right.
During this visit, I had the opportunity to speak with the Öhlins Asia technicians and learn a great deal. Some of the insights even challenged my own previous understanding of suspension setup.
I believe this kind of content is relatively uncommon, especially when it comes to learning suspension setup directly from the manufacturer’s technical team, with a real motorcycle demonstrating the process from the initial installation onwards.
My visit to Öhlins Asia genuinely opened my eyes to the science and practical details behind suspension setup.

Stay tuned for the full video coming soon!
