Who says the Yamaha PG-1 is just a bike for custom builds? After riding one, I can tell you it’s far more fun to ride in the real world than you might expect, especially considering its impressive fundamentals for a brand-new bike priced in the THB 50,000 range (with additional discounts available through Shopee vouchers!).

I’ve had the chance to ride a completely stock PG-1 on both short trips and long-distance journeys. Its acceleration is surprisingly good, thanks to gearing that makes the most of its 115 cc engine. The lower gears deliver useful torque, while the higher gears allow it to build speed. In stock form, mine reached 113 km/h before hitting the rev limiter.

What I like most is the stock suspension. It strikes a good balance—not too stiff and not overly soft—making it comfortable for everyday riding. I even had fun riding downhill from Doi Inthanon. Just remember, though, this is a bike designed for a mix of paved roads and dirt, so ride within its limits!

For off-road riding, the suspension works well, with generous travel and good ground clearance. The wide handlebars also make the bike easy to control, whether sitting or standing on the pegs.

And that’s all on a completely stock bike.
Today, I had the opportunity to ride a modified PG-1 featuring an aftermarket exhaust, upgraded suspension, and a revised riding position.

My first thought when I saw it was, “There’s no way this thing is comfortable to ride!”

But after nearly 70 km riding around Bangkok, I came away with a whole new perspective. The bike had a different character, and the experience was surprisingly exciting.
The more I rode, the more ideas started coming to mind.
I originally thought the PG-1 was best kept relatively simple, with just a few tasteful modifications before things became over the top. But riding this particular bike completely changed my mind.

Looks like I might be breaking the family rules once again and building another custom Yamaha PG-1 of my own!
