Rode Through Floodwater? Your Motorcycle Still Running Doesn’t Mean It’s Problem-Free!
After riding through floodwater, here are 4 key things to check before getting back to your normal riding routine.
1. Check the engine oil
If the oil looks cloudy or creamy, like a milky coffee, water may have contaminated it and reduced its ability to lubricate the engine properly. Stop riding and have a mechanic investigate the cause. However, normal-looking oil does not always guarantee that there is no water contamination.
2. Check the CVT system for water and dirt
On scooters, water and mud entering the CVT compartment can cause the belt or clutch to slip, judder when pulling away, or deliver poor acceleration. Have a mechanic inspect, clean, and thoroughly dry the system. Never apply lubricant to the drive belt or clutch friction surfaces.
3. Check the air filter
A wet or mud-clogged air filter can restrict airflow, causing sluggish performance or irregular engine operation. Inspect the filter element, airbox, and intake passages. If a paper filter is wet or deformed, it should be replaced.
4. Inspect the spark plug
Check the spark plug tip for unusual deposits, including carbon buildup and oil residue, as well as the condition of the electrode. Also inspect the spark plug cap for moisture, especially if the engine misfires or is difficult to start.
Spark plug colour alone cannot confirm whether water has entered the engine, and black deposits are not necessarily caused by flooding. A mechanic should assess the findings alongside the motorcycle’s symptoms.
Important: If your engine stalls in floodwater or you suspect water has entered the engine, do not attempt to restart it repeatedly. Move the motorcycle to a safe location and have it inspected.
Beyond these four checks, remember to inspect the brakes, tyres, electrical system, and final-drive oil on scooters equipped with a final-drive gearbox.
A motorcycle that still runs isn’t necessarily a motorcycle that’s ready to ride. Check it properly before heading back out!
